Police in Wincanton are warning motorists with older or damaged cars they may be at risk of having them stolen after a series of thefts in the town.

PC Ian Stamper of the Somerton Crime Action Team said: "In the past six weeks we have had six cars stolen by a thief using a tow truck to take them away.

"Members of the public may have seen these cars being stolen, but thought nothing of it because they were being towed, especially as they had all either been left parked for some time or were damaged. I would ask anyone who sees an unmarked tow truck removing a vehicle to contact police immediately on 0845 456 7000 so that we can check to make sure it's a legitimate collection."

PC Stamper said the stolen cars were all between 15 and 20 years old and a variety of makes and models.

Police believe the thieves may be targeting these vehicles because of the high value of scrap metal at the moment.

Anyone with any information about the thefts should call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Callers can remain anonymous and could qualify for a reward.

Advice on vehicle security is available from the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.
